On the 24 January 1986, the probe Voyager 2 passes through the Uranus system.
The probe is carrying different detectors : magnetometers, plasma detectors, low-energy charged particles detectors, cosmic rays detectors, radiowaves receivers.
Recordings were made.
Interractions of the solar wind with planet’s magnetosphere, magnetosphere itself, electromagnetic fields, charged particles emissions, charged particle interactions of the planet, its moons, and the solar wind.
All this electromagnetic phenomenons can be transformed into electric signals, which can in turn be amplified and used to excite the membrane of a loud speaker ; thus making audible to the human ear the rustling of the cosmos.
All these sounds were recorded while Voyager 2 was passing near Uranus’ moon Miranda, and assembled without manipulation.

Earlier this week, Oxford’s Bodleian Library announced that it had digitized a 550 year old copy of the Gutenberg Bible along with a number of other ancient bibles, some of them quite beautiful. Not to be outdone, the British Library came out with its own announcement on Thursday:
We have released over a million images onto Flickr Commons for anyone to use, remix and repurpose. These images were taken from the pages of 17th, 18th and 19th century books digitised by Microsoft who then generously gifted the scanned images to us, allowing us to release them back into the Public Domain. The images themselves cover a startling mix of subjects: There are maps, geological diagrams, beautiful illustrations, comical satire, illuminated and decorative letters, colourful illustrations, landscapes, wall-paintings and so much more that even we are not aware of.

homemade all-natural castile laundry soap recipe
I wanted a liquid laundry detergent that used soap that I liked and when I found the recipe for this one it gave me the opportunity to try it. I even made my own washing soda. According to this, I will have enough for 32 loads. Happy washing!
For Powdered Soap
- 1 5-oz. bar Dr. Bronner’s pure castile soap (or other pure castile bar soap, including homemade)
- 1 c. washing soda
- ¼ c. baking soda
- ¼ c. Celtic sea salt, epsom salt, or kosher Real Salt
For Liquid Soap
- 1 gal. (16 c.) water, divided (for liquid soap only)
- ½ c. washing soda
- ¼ c. baking soda
- ¼ c. Celtic sea salt, epsom salt, or kosher Real Salt
- 1 c. liquid Dr. Bronner’s soap (or one 5-ounce bar, grated)
- 1 tbsp. Thieves Household Cleaner (optional)
For Powdered Soap
- In a food processor with a grating attachment, shred the bar of soap (or do it manually if you’d rather, but use the finest grate on your grater). Remove the grating attachment and add the washing soda, baking soda, and salt to the food processor then pulse together until a fine powder results (or if you’re doing it manually, just mix the finely shredded soap and the powders together in a bowl).
- To use, add 1 tablespoon (2 tablespoons for very soiled clothes) to a regular load of wash.
For Liquid Soap
- In a large pot, bring about 4 cups of the water to a boil. Gradually add the washing soda, baking soda, and salt. Stir until dissolved.
- Allow to cool until touchably warm then pour into a bucket or some other container (I used to use an empty, cleaned out plastic kitty litter jug; I marked a 1 gallon line on side so it involved less measuring). Add the remaining water then the liquid Dr. Bronner’s soap and Thieves Household Cleaner a little at a time, stirring after each addition.
- Stir or shake (with a lid on of course) before using.
- To use, add about ½ cup (more for heavily soiled clothes) to a regular load of laundry.
Notes
- About Clumping: Sometimes the powdered version of this recipe will clump, especially in higher humidity. This can be alleviated by pulsing the powder in a blender or food processor. Be sure to store in an airtight container (put plastic wrap over the top of the container if necessary).
- For Cloth Diapers: Do NOT use this on cloth diapers. The soap will cause cloth diapers to repel. Use the Homemade Cloth Diaper Detergent instead.

Beyond these methods here, you can also freeze the herb in olive oil, or make pesto and freeze that too. But if you want the basil whole and unadulterated, these are the best ways.
1. Freeze the leaves whole You can use frozen basil exactly as you would with fresh leaves. The leaves will shrink as they freeze, so cup for cup, plan to use slightly less than if you were cooking with fresh basil.
Freeze basil whole leaves in these 3 easy steps:
- Blanch: Remove the basil leaves from the stem and blanch them in boiling water for 2 seconds.
- Ice bath: Transfer the leaves to an ice bath.
- Dry & freeze: Dry completely and store in a freezer-safe container, separating the layers with wax or parchment paper.
2. Puree and freeze If the idea of basil vinaigrette, pesto or adding fresh basil to soup or stew sounds exciting, then consider pureeing and freezing fresh basil leaves for later.
Puree and freeze fresh basil in these 3 easy steps:
- Prep: Remove the basil leaves from the stem, then wash and dry completely.
- Puree: Use a food processor to puree the fresh basil leaves with olive oil. Use 1 tablespoon of olive oil per 1 cup of basil.
- Freeze: Freeze the pureed basil in an ice cube tray, then store in a large resealable plastic bag or freezer-safe container.
3. Dry it If you like cooking with dried basil, say goodbye to the jars in the spice aisle, because now is the perfect time to dry your own. There are a few different methods, but I like to stick with oven drying because it’s so easy.
Oven dry basil in these 3 easy steps:
- Prep: Remove the basil leaves from the stem, then wash and dry completely.
- Dry: Set your oven to the lowest temperature. Place the basil leaves on a parchment-lined baking sheet, then place it on the upper rack of the oven.
- Bake for 2-4 hours, until the leaves are crumbly.
- Crumble & store: Remove the basil from the oven and cool. Crumble the basil leaves and store in airtight containers.

Ginger Bug
Yield: about 1 pint
Ginger bug, a slurry of fermented ginger and sugar, forms the basis for homemade, traditionally fermented sodas including root beer, mint sodas, or fruit-based sodas that are rich in beneficial bacteria.
Ingredients
- Fresh Ginger
- Whole Unrefined Cane Sugar , or substitute jaggery
Instructions
- Break off a knob from your hand of ginger, peel away its papery skin and grate it until you have 2 heaping tablespoons. Place the grated ginger in a small jar, whisk in 1 tablespoon unrefined cane sugar and 2 tablespoons filtered water. Cover the jar loosely and allow it to ferment in a warm spot in your kitchen.
- Every day for at least 5 days, mix an additional 2 tablespoons grated ginger, 1 tablespoon sugar and 2 tablespoons water into your jar. The ginger will begin to foam and bubble at its top, and will take on the yeasty fragrance of beer. After 5 days, it is ready to use. You can also store it in the refrigerator, and feed it 2 tablespoons grated ginger, 1 tablespoon sugar and 2 tablespoons water once a week.
- To use the ginger bug to make homemade sodas, prepare 1 quart of herbal tea sweetened with a caloric sweetener like sugar. Strain off ¼ cup of the ginger bug’s liquid and whisk it into the sweetened tea. Replace the ¼ cup ginger bug you’ve removed with 2 tablespoons sugar dissolved into ¼ cup water. Transfer the sweetened tea and ginger bug to flip-top bottles (available here), and allow it to ferment at room temperature for 3 days. Transfer to the fridge or drink straight away.
