Tumblr: http://ift.tt/1O1xtFgDrones can give us an extraordinary view of cities still in their prime — cities like Los Angeles, New York, London, Bangkok & Mexico City. They can also give us a rare glimpse of places no longer inhabited, places quieted by the unspeakable. We’ve shown you a drone’s-eye view of Chernobyl. This week, it’s Auschwitz. Shot by the BBC, this sobering footage carries us over the massive Nazi concentration, built in Southern Poland, where 1.1 million people died during World War II, most of them (90%) European Jews. Many died in the gas chambers. Others of starvation, forced labor, infectious diseases, and sadistic medical experiments.
Below, you can also watch a newly-released short documentary on Auschwitz. Produced by Steven Spielberg and narrated by Meryl Streep, it premiered last week before 300 Holocaust survivors in Auschwitz, helping to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the camp.

"Six simple rituals: 1. Drink a glass of water when you wake up. Your body loses water while you..."
Six simple rituals:
1. Drink a glass of water when you wake up. Your body loses water while you sleep, so you’re naturally dehydrated in the morning. A glass of water when you wake helps start your day fresh.
2. Define your top 3. Every morning ask yourself, “What are the top three most important tasks that I will complete today?” Prioritizes your day accordingly and don’t sleep until the Top 3 are complete.
3. The 50/10 Rule. Solo-task and do more faster by working in 50/10 increments. Use a timer to work for 50 minutes on only one important task with 10 minute breaks in between. Spend your 10 minutes getting away from your desk, going outside, calling friends, meditating, or grabbing a glass of water.
4. Move and sweat daily. Regular movement keeps us healthy and alert. It boosts energy and mood, and relieves stress.
5. Express gratitude. Gratitude fosters happiness. Each morning, think of at least five things you’re thankful for. In times of stress, pause and reflect on these things.
6. Reflect daily. Bring closure to your day through 10 minutes of reflection. Asks yourself, “What went well?” and “What needs improvement?”

The Funk Hunters are one of Canada’s top breakout acts, gaining accolades from all corners of the electronic music scene and pushing boundaries with the constant evolution of their live stage show featuring custom synched visuals and a LIVE 6-piece band. Nick Middleton and Duncan Smith have redefined their sound, bridging the gap between electronic and live music. Originally carving out a name for themselves by reviving and remixing rare classics, their focus has turned to creating original compositions and collaborating with world class musicians and vocalists both in the studio and on stage. Combining the melody and emotion of funk and soul with the grit and heavy punch of electronic drums and basslines, The Funk Hunters signature sound has been selling out venues across the country and leading them on tours around the world. During live shows, their 4-turntable Audio Visual set now shares the stage with a full band including live vocals, guitar, trumpet, saxophone, keys and drums.
The Funk Hunters have had a busy year and it’s no wonder why. Managing and producing music for their own imprint/record label ‘Westwood Recordings,’ coupled with their North American, European, Australian and New Zealand tours, the duo burst into the international music spotlight in 2012 and quickly gained momentum worldwide. Integrating a custom synced video set with live musicians is not only visually captivating but is pushing the boundaries of performance innovation. Everything is a Remix: The Full Series, Exploring the Sources of Creativity, Released in One Polished HD Video on Its 5th Anniversary Open Culture
For the first time, the whole series as a single video in HD.
Written and Remixed by Kirby Ferguson
In the five years since the series launched, Everything is a Remix has been viewed over two million times and produced a popular TED Talk. Amazingly, Remix continues to change the way people think about creativity, originality, and copyright.
To celebrate the five year anniversary, I’ve polished up the original four parts and merged them into a single video. For the first time now, the whole series is available as a single video with proper transitions all the way through, unified styling, and remixed and remastered audio. Part One has been entirely rebuilt in HD.

(via 1959: The Year that Changed Jazz | Open Culture)
1959. It was a pivotal year for jazz. Musicians started breaking away from bebop, exploring new, experimental forms. And four absolutely canonical LPs were recorded that year: Kind of Blue by Miles Davis; Time Out by Dave Brubeck; Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus; and The Shape of Jazz to Come by Ornette Coleman. 1959 also found America on the cusp of great social and political upheaval. Integration, Vietnam, the Cuban Missile Crisis — they were all coming around the bend, and sometimes figures like Mingus and Coleman commented musically on these events.
This transformative period gets nicely covered by the recent BBC documentary, 1959: The Year that Changed Jazz. The outtake above focuses on Ornette Coleman and his innovative work as a free jazz musician. If it whets your appetite, you can dive into the full program on YouTube. The documentary featuring interviews with Brubeck, Coleman, Lou Reed, and Herbie Hancock is available runs roughly 60 minutes.

Homemade Ketchup
Homemade Ketchup is the perfect dip for your kids (or you) - no added sugar or funky ingredients, can be tweaked to your tastes, and it counts as a veggie!
1 6 oz can tomato paste
¼-½ cup apple cider vinegar
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon cumin
⅛ teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon mustard powder
Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.
Notes
If you use less than ½ c cider vinegar, add water to a total of ½ c liquid. We like the full ½ c, but you may prefer t less vinegary.
Recipe keeps well in the fridge, so it can easily be doubled and stored for a few weeks.

agritecture: Most Americans could be sustained on local foods...
Tumblr: http://ift.tt/1ivzxb7Most Americans could be sustained on local foods alone—except in NY and LA
The researchers found that based on population data from the year 2000, up to 82% of people in the US could eat a standard American diet with food from within 50 miles of home. That proportion goes up to 85% for a vegetarian diet, and down to 80% for a meat-intensive diet. If the foodshed radius expands to 100 miles, the potential for a standard American diet goes up to 90%, 93% for a vegetarian diet, and 88% for a meat-intensive diet.
Not everyone can eat so locally, though, even in the utopian model created with the study’s computer programs and algorithms. While most cities, including Chicago and San Francisco, can feed 100% of their populations with food from within 50 miles, large cities that have relatively little nearby cropland cannot. “New York City and Los Angeles, for example, can support only about 10% of their populations with a 50-mile foodshed radius but as much as 30-50% with a 100-mile foodshed radius.”

With our latest Transparency, we give you some examples of how much water is used in some of your daily activities, so that you can begin calculate your footprint and try to reduce your gallons.
To help put things in perspective, think about this: your standard trash barrel holds 32 gallons and a mid-sized passenger car-if pumped full of water-has room for a little more than 800 gallons. So, the difference in the amount of water it takes to produce a pound of chicken and a pound of beef is enough to fill almost two whole cars.*
*If a cow weighs 1400lbs at market weight the amount of water [to grow the grain, grass etc. and consume] used to create that weight as the cow is growing at the same time is staggering.
This is one of the reasons I dramatically reduced my consumption of meat at home more than 30 years ago.

Sprouted Spring Salad in a Jar
- 1 cup cooked chickpea, thoroughly rinsed if using canned
- ½ cup grated carrots
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, left intact they will preserve longer than sliced
- 1 cup shelled edamame beans
- ½ cup pine nuts, or other nuts as desired
- 1 cup fresh spring sprouts of choice such as alfalfa, mustard, clover, onion For the Basil Vinaigrette
- 5 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 ½ Tbsp red wine vinegar
- 4-6 fresh basil leaves, chopped
- 1 heaping tsp sweet Dijon mustard
- Sea salt & coarse black pepper to taste
————–
Notes: This particular recipe is set up for 2 x 500 ml (or 2 cup) jars. But you can choose any size jar for these salads depending on your needs and intended use.
By the way, these salad jars also make great party favours for showers, parties and even weddings. If properly packed, they can last for up to 5 days in the fridge.
Generally, the heavier ingredients should be placed on the bottom of the jar (such as your protein choice: poultry, fish, lentils, legumes, tofu, etc.) and the lighter items over top – vegetables, nuts, fruit, as desired. It’s best to leave fragile greens for the very top. The dressing sits at the bottom of the jar so all you have to do is pour the salad out onto a plate/bowl or simply turn the bottle upside down and shake gently with lid on if enjoying directly from the jar.
Combine vinaigrette ingredients in a container with fitted lid and shake well. Place chickpeas in a bowl and pour basil vinaigrette over, mixing to combine.
After thoroughly washing two mason jars, place a ½ cup of the chickpea/vinaigrette mixture into each one, being sure to add all of the dressing which will be needed for the rest of the salad.
Layer a ½ portion of carrots followed by tomato, edamame and nuts. Finish with sprouted greens.
Seal jars and place in the fridge until ready to use or to offer as a gift. (via Sprouted Spring Salad in a Jar)

Homemade Sunscreen
Ingredients:
½ cup of 100% pure aloe (preferably organic) – it should be globby, like it came fresh out of the plant.
20 drops carrot seed oil OR raspberry seed oil – (raspberry seed oil has a higher SPF if that is what you are looking for)
5 tbsp coconut oil
3 capsules of Vitamin E oil (break open the capsules) or hemp seed oil (2 tbsp)
5 drops of Lavender oil
2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide (purchase a non-nano version that won’t be absorbed into the skin. Be careful not to inhale the powder). This makes a natural SPF of 20+ or more can be added.)
Make sure not to inhale the Zinc Oxide- use a mask if necessary!
NOTE: Please omit zinc oxide from the recipe to make a truly natural and toxic free version of this sunscreen, especially during preparation. Zinc oxide can affect the lungs and reproductive system if inhaled. Replace the zinc oxide with 1 tablespoon of avocado oil which helps increase the sun protection factor (SPF).
Recipe modified from Earth Remedy.org
Or you can simplify it with this simple 3 ingredient recipe:

Ingredients
½ Cup Virgin Coconut Oil
2 Tablespoons Non Nana Zinc Oxide
1 Tablespoon Red Raspberry Seed Oil
